New York City gets its own ‘.nyc’ domain

The Big Apple is the first city in the world to snag its own website suffix, which could be a big boon to businesses and brands based in New York.

Before the year is out, New York City-based brands looking to truly, deeply identify themselves with the city that never sleeps will be able to do so by dropping their “.com” domains and getting a “.nyc.”

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office announced Tuesday that New York would be “one of the first cities”—and the first in the United States—with its own top-level domain:

Of course, the city had to set up a website with a “.com” address to tout the new domain.
