Federal agency announces ‘steps to protect’ breach victims
Some 21 million Social Security numbers were stolen in a breach of the Office of Personnel Management’s systems. (Update)
In June, officials blamed China for a data breach that involved 4 million government employees. Officials announced yet another security compromise Thursday, and this one dwarfs the previous breach.
Some 21 million people who have applied for security clearances and their relatives had their Social Security numbers and other information stolen in a May “cyber incident,” according to a press release from the Office of Personnel Management.
