MedStar Health hit by cyberattack, turns away patients
While communicators at the Baltimore-based medical group work out the PR messaging, IT and HR pros are assessing the damage from Monday’s security breach.
The stories are peppered with limited comments and anonymous sources.
When The Washington Post reported Monday afternoon that MedStar Health’s computer network had been compromised, “unidentified” law enforcement authorities, hospital employees and patients spoke to reporters mostly on the condition that they remain anonymous.
Some 24 hours later, the Post said patients had been turned away from several of MedStar’s clinics and facilities.
MedStar officials have not responded to multiple requests for comment, but someone who works closely with the $5 billion health-care provider confirmed that the computer systems remain down and that staff has been turning patients away.
Monday morning mayhem
