Starbucks and McDonald’s filter Wi-Fi to prevent pornography access
Though neither company has issues with consumers’ current internet use, the announcements seek to provide ‘a safe environment’ for customers.
The companies have announced that they will begin filtering out pornography from their networks.
The announcements come after pressure from Enough Is Enough and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. Both groups have been asking for those that offer public Wi-Fi to install measures that prevent people from using them to view pornography.
The Starbucks and McDonald’s announcements are a huge win for the groups. Enough Is Enough’s president, Donna Rice Hughes, said in a statement:
Parents can have peace of mind that, when they or their children go to McDonald’s, they will have a safer and more friendly WiFi experience, filtered from pornography, from child porn and from potential sexual exploitation and predation. McDonald’s deserves widespread praise for this act of corporate responsibility and commitment to children and family safety.
Starbucks and McDonald’s representatives said that though they didn’t have a problem with consumers accessing pornography, but their moves will hopefully ensure that it doesn’t become one.
