Yahoo responds to work-from-home controversy

By Kevin Allen | Posted: February 27, 2013
It’s the PR storm that won’t go away.

Last week, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer issued a memo banning working remotely, setting of an international debate. The company was criticized by many, lauded by few.

On Tuesday, Yahoo issued a brief statement to The New York Times first published:
“This isn’t a broad industry view on working from home. This is about what is right for Yahoo right now.”
Yahoo refused to comment on a front-page Times story that ran Tuesday morning. It issued the statement to the paper on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Times.

The leaked internal memo from the company last week stated: “Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.”

Among the critics of the policy were mom bloggers, reports Business Insider. For instance, Kelly Steele, writing at ScaryMommy.com, said:
“Did Marissa Mayer actually have a baby or was that like a ploy for press or something? To me, she just seems so out of touch with the reality of the American family. “
Mayer moved from Google to CEO of Yahoo last year while she was seven months pregnant. After her pregnancy, Mayer reportedly took only two weeks off. Since then she’s been criticized for bringing her baby to Yahoo’s nursery, while telling employees they can no longer telecommute.

Roughly 22 percent of PR professionals telecommute, according to a PR Daily survey.
