Sharing information on social media is akin to having sex

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: May 10, 2012
Sometimes, sending a tweet can be so … sexy?

That may sound like an odd assertion (unless you’re tweeting naughty pics), but a new study from researchers at Harvard found that sharing information on social media activates the same pleasure centers in the brain that are stimulated when we eat, get money, and have sex.

“It's all a matter of degrees of course (talking about yourself isn't quite as pleasurable as sex for most of us),” writes The Los Angeles Times, “but the science makes it clear that our brain considers self-disclosure to be a rewarding experience.”

The Harvard study also bolsters new research from Ketchum. The agency’s Digital Living Index found that 96 percent of people either love or like technology, while 4 percent dislike it and 1 percent hates it. (We assume the Ketchum researchers are rounding up; the percentages mentioned add up to 101 percent.)
