Brooklyn Nets PR Twitter feed is impressing the press

By Michael Sebastian | Posted: February 22, 2013
A PR department’s Twitter feed stole headlines this week for all the right reasons.

The feed belongs to the PR department at the Brooklyn Nets, and media outlets from USA Today to Deadspin have praised the account for its irreverent use of statistics.

Here’s an example:

Tweets such as that have websites like Sports Grid proclaiming: “Merry Belated Christmas, everyone. This Twitter is better than anything we could afford to buy you.” Deadspin, which is owned by Gawker Media, an entity that despises pretty much everything PR, said: “God bless the Brooklyn Nets’ PR staff.”

In case you’re thinking this is a parody account—and there are plenty of PR parody Twitter feeds—two people from the Nets public relations confirmed they are behind the @Nets_PR. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t go into any more detail than that.

As Mashable noted in a story this week, “The silliness [of @Nets_PR] comes in contrast to the typically bland pro sports team PR feed playbook, which usually features dry-but-relevant stats about things such as road records, points scored in different quarters and different players' statistical accomplishments.”

The account consists of mostly sports numbers—as well as logistical information for reporters—but it peppers the feed with gems like the 32-0 tweet, as well as this:

Apparently, irreverence goes a long way in impressing the sports press.
