Study: 51 percent of Americans use Facebook

The study also noted that nearly one-third of Americans age 12 and older have a smartphone.

More than half—51 percent—of Americans age 12 and older are using Facebook, according to a study released Tuesday by Arbitron and Edison Research.

That number was 8 percent in 2008.

The study, first conducted in 1998, asked 2,020 Americans about their use of digital platforms and new media.
