Rubio’s appeal to youth includes TV references, Snapchat, emojis
The GOP senator announced his presidential bid by saying leaders ‘from yesterday’ should step aside and let a new generation step up.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, became the latest candidate to announce a bid for the presidency Monday, and his big pitch focused squarely on young voters.
“Just yesterday, a leader from yesterday began a campaign for president by promising to take us back to yesterday,” he said, indirectly referencing Hillary Clinton. “But yesterday is over, and we are never going back.”
Rubio went on to describe his children’s generation as “the most important generation in American history.”
The Florida senator’s youth-focused approach isn’t limited to rhetoric, either. Social media is a huge part of his campaign. For instance, staffers live-tweeted his Monday speech. Tweets and Facebook posts counted down the hours to the announcement. One tweet played on young viewers’ love of the HBO series “Game of Thrones”:
