We’re one story away from sustainable typefaces becoming an honest-to-goodness trend.
First, there was the story of the 14-year-old Pittsburgh student who claimed the U.S. government could save $400 million
if it simply switched its go-to font to Garamond.
Now, ad agency Grey London has teamed up with Ryman Stationery to create a sustainable font, dubbed Ryman Eco. They claim the font uses 33 percent less ink than other typefaces, which they extrapolate to a savings of 500 million ink cartridges and 15 million oil barrels annually.
Ryman Eco, which Grey says was developed at the same time as Suvir Mirchandani's idea, began as an internal project. Grey brought the idea to Ryman, the U.K.'s biggest stationer, and worked with Monotype's Dan Rhatigan to develop the font. Grey hopes to make Ryman Eco the default printer typeface across its global network.
